What Kind of a Crisis?:A New Perspective on the Third Century Crisis in the Roman Empire

Öz

The Crisis of the Third Century is one of the most open topics for examination in the history of the Roman Empire. This is because of the approach to this period as a "crisis." Modern researchers have put forward different views on the evaluation of this period within the framework of crisis and have tried to explain this process with different bases. Thus, the crisis process has evolved with different views and suggestions. The definition of the period as a crisis has been essential for examining the development process of the empire in terms of the criteria and impact of the crisis. Considering the vast boundaries of the empire, the crisis process has shown differences in its development process. These differences are the points on which the beginning of the crisis process is based, the effects of the crisis, and the different results it has created on the provinces. The evaluation of the start dates of the crisis process in different years and the attribution of its causes and consequences to different aspects also stem from the fact that the internal structure of the crisis process is not the same for the provinces. As a result of the presentation of different views, the crisis has been evaluated with definitions such as transformation or change. On the other hand, although the crisis process is examined with different evaluations, the common acceptance is that this process contained many problems throughout the empire. Because during this period, the empire faced many problems politically, socially, economically, and administratively. The prominence of the crisis definition also arose from the fact that these problems continued simultaneously and for a long time. However, it would be wrong to say that the problems developed in each province under the same effect. For this reason, modern historians believe that it is correct to examine each province independently when necessary during the crisis process. Taking all these into consideration, the third century of the Roman Empire is an open period for evaluation. A thorough examination of these views is essential for understanding Roman history.

Nasıl Bir Kriz?: Üçüncü Yüzyıl Krizine Yeni Bir Bakış

Öz

Üçüncü Yüzyıl Krizi, Roma İmparatorluğu Tarihi’nde incelenmeye en açık olan konulardan biridir. Bunun en önemli nedenlerinden biri bu döneme “kriz” tanımlaması ile yaklaşılmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Modern araştırmacılar, dönemin kriz çerçevesinde değerlendirilmesi hususunda farklı görüşler öne sürmüşler ve bu süreci farklı dayanaklarla açıklamaya çalışmışlardır. Böylece kriz süreci farklı görüş ve önerilerle gelişim göstermiştir. Dönemin kriz olarak tanımlanması, krizin ölçütü ve etkisi bakımından incelenmesi, imparatorluğun dönüşüm süreci bakımından elzem olmuştur. Zira imparatorluğun geniş sınırları göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, kriz sürecinin gelişimi farklılıklar göstermiştir. Bu farklılıklar, kriz sürecinin başlangıcının dayandığı noktalar, krizin etkileri ve bu etkilerin eyaletler üzerinde yarattığı farklı sonuçlardan oluşmaktadır. Kriz sürecinin başlangıç tarihlerinin farklı yıllar çerçevesinde değerlendirilmesi ve sebep ve sonuçlarının farklı hususlara dayandırılması da kriz sürecinin iç yapısının eyaletler için aynı olmamasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Birbirinden farklı görüşlerin öne sürülmesi sonucunda kriz, dönüşüm veya değişim gibi tanımlarla da değerlendirilmiştir. Diğer yandan her ne kadar kriz süreci farklı değerlendirmelerle incelense de bu sürecin, imparatorluk genelinde pek çok sorunu kapsadığı ortak kabul noktasıdır. Zira bu dönemde imparatorluk siyasi, sosyal, ekonomik ve idari açıdan pek çok problemle yüzleşmiştir. Kriz tanımlamasının ön plana çıkması da bu sorunların eş zamanlı olarak ve uzun süre boyunca devam etmesi sebebiyle olmuştur. Bunların yanı sıra sorunların her bir eyalette aynı etki dahilinde gelişim gösterdiğini söylemek yanlış olur. Bu nedenden kaynaklı olarak modern tarihçiler, kriz sürecinde eyaletlerin her birini birbirinden bağımsız bir biçimde incelemenin doğru olduğu kanısındadır. Tüm bu hususlar göz önüne alındığında Roma İmparatorluğu’nun üçüncü yüzyılı, değerlendirmeye açık bir dönem olarak nitelenebilir. Bu görüşlerin etraflıca incelenmesi ise Roma Tarihi’nin anlaşılabilmesi açısından önem taşımaktadır.
