Bu filmler The Searchers (1956), Once Upon a Time in the West (Bir Zamanlar Batıda, 1968) ve Unforgiven (Affedilmeyen, 1992) adlı filmlerdir. Çalışmada yöntem olarak Peirce'in üçlü semiyotik modeli kullanılmıştır.

THE ROAD WEST: A SPATIAL SEMIOTICS OF ROAD AND DISPLACEMENT IN WESTERN FILMS
Öz
Western films, as they are called, hold a significant place in the process of constructing America's cultural identity and shaping the understanding of American cinema. These films frequently explore the themes of the road and displacement, reflecting the individual's struggle with themselves, nature, and society. The aim of this study is to conduct a spatial analysis of the themes of the road and displacement in the genre known as Western cinema from a semiotic perspective. The study focuses on the spatial treatment of these two main themes, examining both their functions and semiotic meanings. It investigates how the concept of the road is used as a signifier in Western cinema. The changes that the journey along the road brings about in the shaping of the identities of the film characters and the phenomenon of displacement are examined in the films studied. Three films featuring the theme of the road are analyzed in this study. These films are The Searchers (1956), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), and Unforgiven (1992). Peirce's three-part semiotic model was used as the method in this study. The findings of the study show that in Western cinema, the identity formation processes of characters are shaped along the path they take, that the path offers new discoveries and areas of freedom, and that this path, sometimes the subject of heroic stories, and the events that unfold along it, support each other. The presence of an escape reflex in these films, which also brings with it a loss of identity and belonging, also leads to displacement. It is seen that the path sign is not only physically present in the Western cinematic understanding, but is also one of the main determinants of the characters' change, transformation, and identity formation processes.
