THE "UPWOLFING" TECHNIQUE AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS IN HANDCRAFTED FELT PRODUCTION
Öz
Non-woven fabrics formed by the interlocking of wool fibers under conditions such as friction, alkaline environments, and pressure are defined as felt. In addition to being an art material, felt is used for daily purposes, in industry, and for animals. People's interest in natural materials is slowly increasing with the fashion movement. Felt is considered a textile product and is included in textile fiber arts. Due to the structure of wool fiber, it responds to the artists' desire to produce freely, and is shaped by the methods of spinning and drying. The "Upwolfing" application method is based on the ability of the wool fiber to maintain the shape it takes during spinning and drying. The method was developed by Irene Van Der Wolf. Wolf has a felting workshop in Breda, the Netherlands. In the method, molds made of sponge are used in the wool fiber's felting and drying phase. The shapes and heights of sponge molds are different from each other. The material of the article is felt and the sample consists of felts made using the "Upwolfing" method. The article is limited to the "Upwolfing" felt-making method. The article aims to determine the characteristics of the method called "Upwolfing" by Irene Van Der Wolf, the raw materials used, and the artistic features of the felt works. The title of the article has been determined as “The "Upwolfing" Technique and Its Characterıstics In Handcrafted Felt Production”. Literature review was used in the method of the article. The data collection tools used during the research were found not to be ethically objectionable by the “Afyon Kocatepe University Social and Human Sciences Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee 05 Meeting Number, 2025/210 Numbered Decision”. The obtained data were evaluated in the conclusion section.
