TEPEGÖZ OF DEDE KORKUT AS A POSTHUMAN AND MONSTER
Öz
This study analyzes the figure of Tepegöz in Dede Korkut, a cornerstone of Turkish culture, as a “posthuman other” and a “monster” by examining the transformation of human perception alongside contemporary technological and scientific advancements through the lens of posthumanism. Posthumanism, which deconstructs the anthropocentric and dualistic approaches (such as human-animal or nature-culture) imposed by traditional humanism, does not view the human as the sole master of the universe but rather as part of a relational network interacting with all living and non-living entities. The study emphasizes the rich possibilities this new perspective offers for interpreting folklore materials. In the Dede Korkut narratives, Tepegöz exhibits an ontological liminality as a hybrid offspring of a shepherd and a fairy, possessing both humanoid and supernatural qualities. When analyzed within the framework of Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s “Monster Theory,” Tepegöz appears as a “cultural body” that mirrors the fears, desires, and ethical boundaries of society. The birth of Tepegöz is depicted as a punishment for an assault on the sacred yer-su (earth-water) cults—specifically the spring and the fairy, its protective spirit; thus, the figure serves as an ethnopedagogical warning sign and an object of lesson for the community. Furthermore, the study evaluates the relationship between Tepegöz and his counterpart Basat through the construction of the posthuman subject. While both characters are initially “liminal” beings, Basat is integrated into the cultural world by being named by Dede Korkut, whereas Tepegöz evolves into a monster representing chaos and the unrestrained self. Basat’s victory over Tepegöz represents more than individual heroism; it symbolizes the restoration of the disrupted universal balance through reason and social ethics. Ultimately, Tepegöz is a multi-layered symbol within Turkish cultural ecology that forces humans to confront their own inherent evil and limitations, while setting the stage for interspecies ethical debates.
