THE MYTH APPROACH IN LITERARY READING/CRITICISM THEORY
Öz
Myths, which have been seen as the explanatory of ritual since the earliest periods of history, have been reproduced over time in oral narrative genres such as epics, fairy tales and legends; In the modern period, it has continued to exist in different forms in written and visual arts such as novels, stories, theater and cinema. Thus, myth has ceased to be just a narrative of belief and has become one of the important sources of aesthetic and artistic production. This study aims to examine the approaches to myth and mythology within the framework of literary reading and criticism theories. Researchers who produce thoughts on the relationship between literature and myth have largely had a common view that artists use myth elements directly or indirectly in their works. While the presence of myth in literary texts is sometimes evident with explicit references, sometimes it is deeply embedded in the structure at the symbolic and archetypal level. For this reason, the relationship between myth and literature can be examined both through superficial narrative elements and by taking into account the sub-layers of meaning of the text. Theorists also questioned the purposes and methods by which myth was used in literary work. In this context, the common conclusion reached is that literary or artistic genres such as novels, stories, and theater make use of myths in order to both increase the attractiveness and deepen and enrich the narrative. While myth elements contribute to the work having a multi-layered meaning structure, it also reproduces cultural memory through the text. Thus, while myth serves to gain originality and depth of meaning in the literary work; Literature also ensures that myths remain relevant and alive. As a result, myth is not only a literary narrative; at the same time, it continues to exist as a basic way of thinking that is the source of the reconstruction and interpretation of many literary works.
