TRANSFERRING ANATOLIAN SELJUK ARCHITECTURAL DECORATIONS TO FABRIC DESIGNS AND APPLICATION SUGGESTIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY
Öz
Anatolian Seljuk decorative art transformed architecture beyond a purely functional understanding of structure, turning it into a holistic field of expression with aesthetic, symbolic, and intellectual dimensions. Geometric, botanical, and written ornamentation integrated with the belief system, mathematical order understanding, and art philosophy of the period, creating a powerful and systematic visual design language. In particular, the principles of repetition, rhythm, and proportion based on surface organization make Seljuk decorative art an important resource for interdisciplinary design studies. This study aims to develop contemporary fabric designs inspired by the decorations seen on stone, wood, and tile surfaces in Anatolian Seljuk period architectural structures and to reinterpret cultural heritage through design. A qualitative approach was adopted in the research; a theoretical framework was established by examining numerous sources related to the subject. During the implementation process, motifs suitable for production on 24-frame weaving looms were selected, and 7 original weaving patterns were drawn using Microsoft Excel. Unit and full reports of the patterns were prepared, and armure and warp plans were created to proceed to the production stage. The woven fabrics were visualized by applying them digitally to women’s clothing collections designed for the target audience. The findings demonstrate that the Anatolian Seljuk decorative approach can be adapted to contemporary textile design both technically and aesthetically.it is considered this study will contribute to the sustainability of cultural heritage through textile and surface design.
