HEREKE SILK CARPET WEAVING AT THE BURSA UMURBEY SILK PRODUCTION AND DESIGN CENTER
Öz
This study was conducted to examine the motif, color, composition, and technical characteristics of Hereke silk carpets woven at the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center. The research was designed within a qualitative research framework, and data were collected through fieldwork, observation, and document analysis and evaluated using descriptive analysis. It was determined that all 16 silk carpets examined within the scope of the study were woven using the Turkish (Gördes) knot technique at a quality level of 10×10. The findings revealed that floral motifs were predominant in the carpets, followed by object-based, geometric, and figurative motifs. While traditional elements of the Ottoman and Hereke carpet tradition, such as tulips, roses, carnations, hyacinths, rumi, and hatayi motifs, were prominent in the motif repertoire, some examples also featured figurative, architectural, and landscape-themed compositions. Color analysis indicated that red and its shades constituted the most frequently used color group, whereas cream, beige, blue, and green tones were preferred as complementary colors supporting the overall composition. The results demonstrate that the silk carpet weaving tradition maintained at the Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center largely preserves the aesthetic characteristics of the classical Ottoman and Hereke carpet tradition. At the same time, it has been enriched with local and contemporary themes, thereby contributing to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage.
