«Karatschajische Studien» by Vilmoš Pröhle: Structure and Contents

The article is devoted to the work of the famous Austro-Hungarian Turkologist V. Pröhle «Karatschajische Studien» as a monument to the history of Karachai-Balkar language. The paper accentuates the necessity of philological analysis of this research for its consideration when reconstructing the stages of the development of the Karachai-Balkar Philology and History. V. Pröhle’s «Karatschajische Studien» presents a linguistic essay of the Karachai variant of Karachai-Balkar language, consisting of sections of Phonetics and Morphology, folklore and ethnographic studies, dictionaries, which are certainly of scientific interest for a wide range of scientists in the field of the history of language, folklore, Karachai culture and life in the early twent, ieth century. In his research V. Pröhle gave a systematic description of phonetic, morphological, syntactic features of Karachay variant of Karachai-Balkar language; he was the first to comprehensively describe and introduce into scientific circulation a systematically structured vocabulary that reflects the totality of the lingvocultural information important for the understanding of the historical development of the world view of ethnic Balkars. The article has both theoretical and practical significance. It can be made use of in further studies on the peculiarities of the formation of Karachai-Balkar language in diachronic terms.
