İKİNCİ DÜNYA SAVAŞI’NDA KIBRISLI KATIRCILAR VE İNGİLİZ SÖMÜRGE YÖNETİMİNE KESİTSEL BİR BAKIŞ

Despite the fact that the island of Cyprus seems to be out of the war during World War II the hardships of the war, recession, and the economy in addition to Italian and German attacks on Cyprus bring the island into the very center of the war itself. The fact that British government starts enlisting the people from so many colonies so as to make use of them in the war also cause the Turkish Cypriots unfortunately enlist and serve for England as well. In spite of the fact that these Turkish Cypriot people are said to serve in the back trenches and the services, it never comes to the reality and the lives of those people turn to be just a tragedy there. At the end of the war, some of the Turkish muleteers have lost their lives, most have been the POWs, left alone, isolated, and forgotten in different points of Europe and Africa. This article aims at enlightening the British imperialistic policy of muleteers in Cyprus during WWII.

Her ne kadar İkinci Dünya Savaşı sürecinde Kıbrıs adası savaşın dışındaymış gibi görünse de bir yandan İtalyanların ve Almanların çeşitli saldırıları, diğer taraftan savaş ekonomisinin yarattığı yıkım nedeniyle savaşı çok yakından hisseder. Ayrıca İngiltere’nin Birinci Dünya Savaşı sürecinde olduğu üzere sömürgesi ülkelerden insanları çeşitli şekillerde askere alması da söz konusu olunca Kıbrıslı Türkler de bir anda kendilerini savaşın içinde bulurlar. Her ne kadar katırcı olarak geri planda görev alacakları söylense de bu insanların hayatı tam bir drama dönüşür. Savaş sonunda bir kısmı hayatını, kaybetmiş, çoğu esir düşmüş, Avrupa’nın ve Afrika’nın farklı noktalarında kaderleriyle baş başa bırakılmış ve unutulmuş durumdadırlar. Bu çalışma sömürgeci dünya düzeninin bir parçası olan İngiltere’nin Kıbrıs adasına yönelik siyasetine katırcılar bağlamında ışık tutmak için hazırlanmıştır.
