Certain Beliefs About Death and Post-Mortem Practices in Qashqai Turks

Öz

Qashquai Turks, a nomadic community which broke away from the Azerbaijan terrain during Safavi period, are of great importance in that they have carried the old Turkish culture up to date. While collecting data in Qashquai field, death was one of the most difficult parts. Traditional practices and beliefs regarding death outweigh those concerning birth and marriage and they have relatively been less affected in the course of time. The fact that the practices concerning death have a religious aspect must be related with the fact that they exist when there is a case of death or an imminent death.Similar to the Turkish world and Anatolia, it was observed in the Qashquai field that such animals as foxes, jackals, owls and rabbits, ill-timed crowing roosters, objects broken without reason, shooting stars, seeing in a dream one’s teeth taken out are the messengers of death. Therefore, it is a common traditional practice in the Turkish world not to lend people white food during night as a measure to avoid death. Thinking on the function of this practice it is thought to be a social mechanism to remove the limits of visiting a neighbour during night. Moreover, unlike the other Turkish communities, many beliefs and practices of abstention concerning the day Saturday were encountered in the Qashquai field. The practices of burying someone with an egg or one of their pair of shoes in order to send away death bring to mind the burial of someone with their belongings in the old Turkish culture. Furthermore, such practices as avoiding working after sunset or killing a snake as a measure to avoid death were also observed in the field.
