The Importance of The Turkish Folk Literature Topics in The Formation of National Consciousness and The Opinions of The Students on These Issues
Öz
The aim of this study is to determine the perspective of the students who have been introduced with Turkish Folk Literature on 10th grade within the scope of main topics of a class for the first time and to determine the effect of this lesson in creating national identity, national culture, and national consciousness on the students. In the study, attempts were made to determine how much of the subjects that were taught in the classes were remembered and cared by the students, and how much did the subjects influence students’ mentalities. Study group of the research consisted of 60 students who were studying on the 11th grade of Ayazağa Anatolian High School in Istanbul in the academic year of 2016-2017. Semi-structured interview method based on qualitative research approach was used in the study. Semi-structured interviews cover interviews of predetermined questions. Within the scope of the study, students were asked nine questions about pre-Islamic Turkish Literature, myth, mythology, legend and mythos they had learned in the previous year. Generally, students remembered the concepts of pre-Islamic Turkish literature. Findings suggested that subjects that the students were taught seemed very effective in reflecting Turkish culture, and that they evoked curiosity about these topics. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the students did not read any books about the subject, the class hours were inadequate, the subjects were taught by teachers based on memorization, and the teachers did not use any visual materials. It has been suggested that the subjects should be taught using daily life examples at very early ages for them to be more permanent and interesting.
