Seben Alaca (Multicoloured) Weavings
Öz
The alaca (multi-coloured) weavings that were found in the field study carried out in the region of Seben comprised the subject of the current article. Hand-weaving goes back to old ages in the region. People in the town of Seben pointed out that particularly the types of “alaca”, “kız kıvrağı” and rug weavings were produced in almost all houses in the past for the purpose of daily use and trousseau. People in the region prepared a different place in the garden, out of their houses to make weavings. It was told by the source people that almost all houses had 2-3 looms and they produced saddlebags, rugs, mats and sacks in one of these looms, they wove underwear called ‘kıvrak” and bed sheets in one of them and alaca weavings in the other. There are still a few people dealing with weaving in the region. Alaca weavings were woven in the shuttled looms called “çulfalık”. These weavings were produced in two ways with the names of “iç donluk” (underwear) and “dış donluk” (trousers). İç donluk was used for the purpose of pyjamas to keep warm while sleeping and dış donluk was used for daily purposes by the women in the region just like shalwar (baggy trousers). Alaca weavings that were woven as plain weave has striped and square types. The purpose of the current article is to introduce the technical, design, colour and composition features of the samples of alaca weavings in the town of Seben in the city of Bolu.
