Expression styles and ways of developing thought are among the factors directly affecting the quality and success of written expression. This study aims to reveal the ways in which 8th grade students develop their thinking with their preferred expression styles in their written expressions. Research is a descriptive study in the screening model. Data were obtained from the written documents of 328 students studying in MEB-affiliated secondary schools in Efeler Country, Aydın Province in 2016-2017 Education Year. Results have been shown in the tables. In the analysis of the data, frequency rates have been used. The research is limited to one lesson hour (40 minutes) and prose texts. 142 of the data obtained by free and creative composition methods are event writings and 186 of them are think piece. Written documents were analyzed according to four basic factors in terms of expression styles and 15 ways of thinking development. The ways of thinking development were determined within the framework of the practices that students place in their work.
As a result of the research, it is determined that the most used style of expression without type classification is narrative expression, and the most commonly way of thinking development is to make use of the visuals. However, the least used style of expression is the discussion, and the least thinking development is to make use of verbal scientific expressions.
