The sustainability dilemma in the Turkish furniture industry: the case of MASKO

Öz

This study examines the sustainability approaches and attitudes of the Turkish furniture industry by focusing on MASKO (Istanbul Furniture and Wood Products Manufacturers Site Management Cooperative), a cluster representing the sector. To develop a multi-stakeholder perspective, the qualitative research presented focuses on the cluster's three main stakeholder groups: producers, consumers, and designers. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 30 participants revealed five themes related to (i) sustainability perceptions, (ii) transformation in materials and production, (iii) market dynamics, (iv) design practices, and (v) policy expectations. The findings indicate that current sustainability transformations in the sector are largely focused on the requirements of export markets. The study also reveals that sustainability priorities and perceptions differ among stakeholder groups. While manufacturers emphasize cost-effective longevity, designers prioritize life-cycle-based strategies, and consumers mostly focus on reliability and health issues. This study highlights modularity, repairability, policy support mechanisms, and certification frameworks as potential leverage points for sustainability transitions in the sector.
