Effect of thermal modification using steam on the physico-mechanical properties of Gigantochloa levis and Bambusa vulgaris
Öz
Bamboo is a sustainable construction material, but is limited by its hygroscopicity and susceptibility to biodegradation. This study evaluated the effects of steam thermal modification (TM) at 175 °C and 200 °C for 30 min on the physico-mechanical properties of Gigantochloa levis and Bambusa vulgaris. Node and internode sections were tested for physical (moisture content, thickness swelling, water absorption, relative density) and mechanical (flexural, compression, tensile) properties using a completely randomized factorial design. TM significantly improved dimensional stability by reducing moisture content, water absorption, and radial swelling. Relative density was mainly influenced by species. While flexural modulus of elasticity remained unaffected, the modulus of rupture decreased at 200 °C. Nodal sections consistently exhibited lower tensile strength than internodes, with the lowest values occurring at 200 °C. Conversely, compression strength significantly increased after TM. Overall, moderate thermal modification (175 °C for 30 min) provided the optimal balance between enhanced dimensional stability and mechanical performance for both species.
