Zangezur Corridor from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean

Abstract

The Azerbaijan-Armenia War, which started on September 27, 2020, ended with the decisive victory of Azerbaijan on November 10 and the end of the Armenian occupation that lasted for 30 years. It has created new opportunities and cooperation in a vast geography for Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus region, Russia, Iraq, Syria, and Israel, extending to Turkey. Although Armenia has signed the ceasefire agreement, which acknowledges that it has come out of the war with a decisive defeat, it still refuses to fulfill its obligations arising from the agreement's provisions, relying on the support of the powers behind it. The Zangezur Corridor will provide excellent opportunities for developing the transportation network on a regional and global scale and opening and guaranteeing the Azerbaijan-Nakhichevan transportation lines. While the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway connects Azerbaijan with the Eastern, Black Sea, Central Anatolia and Marmara regions of Turkiye, the Zangezur Corridor can connect Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, which is a part of Azerbaijan, to the Southeastern and Mediterranean regions of Turkiye. The Zangezur Corridor through the new railway line to be built in Southeastern Anatolia will not only cause Turkiye and Azerbaijan but also countries such as Syria, Jordan, Israel, and even Iraq, which have a coast to the Mediterranean, to be integrated into the railway transportation network, as well as Armenia. Azerbaijan's railway network through the Zangezur Corridor, a branch of the new railway line to be built in South East Anatolia, will cover a wide geography extending from Iskenderun to Syria and Israel and will cover Asia-Middle East, Russia-Middle East, Azerbaijan-Israel. It will lead to the development of trade relations, the reduction of transportation costs and the integration of transportation networks in a vast geography.
