The purpose of the study is to investigate qualitatively; how school counselors’, who have been working in the primary and secondary schools, perceptions of their principles vary with respect to their existing career phases.
The main data of the study was collected with interview according to semi-constructed interview form. While the form was developed, the pilot study was undertaken and the experts opinions was collected. After that procedures, the development of the form was completed. The interviews were experienced with thirty-one school councelors. The school counselors, which were interviewed, were classified with respect to their career phases. The classification was done according to definiton of teachers’ career phases defined by Bakioğlu in 1996.
There were seven counselors from first phase, nine from second phase, seven form third phase, six form fourth phase and two from fifth phase. The data, collected from the interviews, were qualitatively studied and the content analysis was undertaken with respect to five main titles which arised from the transcription of the qualitative data.
At the end of the content analysis; it was found that, from the continuum of initiation phase to last phase, the perceptions of the school counselors to their principals varied according to their existing career phases. School counselors, perceived their principals’ leadership and communication skills, contribution to their professional development, information and approach to guidence and councelling in the schools differently with respect to their existing career phases.
The findings of this study were defined how school counselors perceive their principals according to their existing career phases. The findings of this study should be investigated one by one and deeply. Thus every finding could be a topic for further studies
