Evaluation of Skills of High School Students in Interpreting Daily Life Events İn Lighth of The Knowledge They Learn in Their Physics Lessons
Öz
This research has been conducted in order to reveal to what extent the high school
students are able to apply the knowledge they obtained in science-physics courses when
interpreting the nature phenomena they encounter in daily life. It is intended that the obtained
results contribute to enhancement of the teaching methods.
The aim of this research is to find out what extent students could relate the flux
concept to nature phenomena like seasons and illumination. A similar research was conducted
with graduates in physics of Harvard University. The mentioned research has been a reference
when this research was conducted. The previous research has shown that the students could
not relate the flux concept to phenomena like illumination and how seasons come into being.
Two classical questions were prepared concerning the illumination and origin of
seasons. A total of 99 high school students were asked these questions (35 students from a
science high school and 64 students from a super high school). The answers were evaluated
one by one. By being put into categories, the opinions and views were classified as conceptual
thoughts. Under the light of this classification, it was tried to identify misconceptions and
their origins. Suggestions were developed according to the results.
