This study aimed at evaluating the use of maps in the news channels in Turkey. In the study, four national and one international television news channels were watched from 17:00 pm to 24:00 pm for seven days between 9th and 15th of December 2013 in Turkey. The study evaluated the use of maps in the news in terms of their date of publication, number, topic, type, size and whether or not they included a scale, or legend, and whether they were appropriate for the news. As found in the study, 830 news were presented from all the news channels and 127 maps were used with the news during the review period. A great majority of the maps (approximately 80%) used in the news were related to weather forecasting and road conditions. As concluded in the study, the use of maps on the news channels in Turkey is not sufficient. More maps should be used in the news channels by considering their contributions to delivering the news to the audience and to creating a more conscious society

TÜRKİYE’DE HABER KANALLARINDA HARİTA KULLANIMI

ÖZET

Bu çalışma Türkiye’deki haber kanallarında harita kullanımının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada dördü ulusal biri uluslararası olmak üzere toplamda beş televizyon haber kanalı 9-15 Aralık 2013 tarihleri arasında yedi günlük bir zaman diliminde akşam 17:00 ile 24:00 saatleri arasında izlenmiştir. Çalışmada haber bültenlerinde ne zaman, hangi türde, hangi haber konusunda, hangi boyutta kaç haritanın kullanıldığı, haritalarda ölçek ve lejant gibi özelliklerin bulunup bulunmadığı ve haritaların genel olarak haber konusuna uygun olup olmadığı değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada izlenen tüm kanalların haber bültenlerinde izleme süresinde 830 haber yayınlandığı, bunların içerisinde 127 haritanın kullanıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Kullanılan haritaların yaklaşık %80’inin hava ve yol durumu ile ilgili olduğunun belirlendiği çalışmada haber bültenlerinde haritalara yeterli ölçüde yer verilmediği tespit edilmiştir. Haberin izleyiciye ulaştırılmasına ve daha bilinçli bir toplum yapısının oluşturulmasına yaptığı katkılar göz önüne alınarak, haber bültenlerinde daha fazla haritaya yer verilmesi gerekmektedir.
