Öz

Yorgos Lanthimos’un yönetmenliğini üstlendiği Kutsal Geyiğin Ölümü (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, 2017) filmi, içeriğini Antik Yunan mitlerinden Iphigenia trajedisinden almaktadır. Film; mitoloji, etik, adalet ve suçluluk temaları etrafında şekillenen bir anlatıya sahiptir. Lanthimos, sinemasında özgün konuları alışılmışın dışında bir anlatım diliyle işlemektedir. Bu filmde kalp cerrahı Steven Murphy, Iphigenia trajedisindeki Kral Agamemnon’un modern bir karşılığı olarak kurgulanmıştır. Steven, geçmişte gerçekleşen bir ölümle ilişkili olarak ailesiyle birlikte adalet ve kefaretin merkezinde yer alır. Ölen hastanın oğlu Martin, tanrıça Artemis’i temsil eden bir figür olarak, Steven’dan bir tür kurban talebinde bulunur. Bu çalışma, filmdeki “kurban”, “kefaret” ve “adalet” temalarını René Girard’ın kuramı doğrultusunda nitel çözümleme yöntemiyle inceleyerek, modern bir trajedide mitolojik ve teorik katmanların nasıl yeniden üretildiğini irdelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.

A Modern Iphigenia Tragedy: Sacrifice, Atonement and Justice in The Death of the Sacred Deer according to Girard's theory of sacrifice

Öz

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, takes its content from the tragedy of Iphigenia from Ancient Greek myths. The film has a narrative shaped around the themes of mythology, ethics, justice and guilt. Lanthimos deals with unique subjects in his cinema with an unusual narrative language. In this film, heart surgeon Steven Murphy is constructed as a modern counterpart of King Agamemnon in the tragedy of Iphigenia. Steven is at the centre of justice and redemption with his family in relation to a past death. Martin, the son of the deceased patient, as a figure representing the goddess Artemis, demands a kind of sacrifice from Steven. This study aims to examine how mythological and theoretical layers are reproduced in a modern tragedy by analysing the themes of "sacrifice", "atonement" and "justice" in the film through qualitative analysis in line with René Girard's theory.
