Teaching How to Write Construction Specifications Through the Narrative by Utilizing Tacit Knowledge

Abstract

Knowledge management issues need to be addressed in architectural education, particularly in the areas of "building regulations and standards" and "design and specification. Transforming tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge in construction-related theory and practice is crucial for architectural education. However, the integration of tacit knowledge in this field remains significantly limited. On the other hand, imitating reality in the process of creating a narrative can provide a more holistic and in-depth understanding in architectural education. This article aims to present a method that combines tacit knowledge revealed by Ricoeur's imitation approach and Nonaka's SECI knowledge transformation model for teaching construction specification writing in architectural education. This study applied a method combining Ricoeur's Mimesis and Nonaka's SECI model to 32 interior architecture students in the ‘Construction Cost’ course at Istanbul Arel University, revealing their ability to produce sector-relevant technical specifications.
