The Anti-Muslim Sentiment in Various Forms of Representation in Media and Cinema

Yıl 2018, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 1, 5 - 16, 28.06.2018

In its encounter with the West, Islam had lost its superior role in the modern World. As a result, the religion of Islam and its followers had been brought into a position of “other”. Ongoing stereotypes since the Medieval Ages had been evolved into bland discrimination due to the change in terms of hegemony. Thanks to rapid advancement in mass communication media the expansion of stereotypes had been facilitated and all the more internalized as a result of bombardment coming from different types of media instruments. The anti-Islam or anti-Muslim sentiments are increasing every day as an outcome of hearsay based on misinformation on Islam. Consequently, the Western states have been abusing Islamophobia to legitimize their foreign policies especially in the Middle East. In such a misinformed context under the influence of media and cinema films new types of racism emerge and cause social and global problems. The West has been deepening Islamophobia in order to protect their overseas interests but this time they harm international relationships among different World cultures.
