Earthquake and otorhinolaryngological emergencies; Turkey's great disaster in 2023

Aim: Turkey, which was shaken by two very strong and incredibly destructive earthquakes that affected approximately sixteen million people, experienced one of the disasters of the century, for which the World Health Organization also issued an alarm. The aim of this study is to evaluate the devastating effects of the earthquake natural disaster from an otorhinolaryngological perspective and to contribute to the trauma literatüre. Method: In order to demonstrate the devastating effects of the February 6thEarthquake in Turkey, patients who were consulted between 06.02.2023 and 06.03.2023, and who had complete file data were included in the study. Otorhinolaryngological traumas include neck hematoma, peripheral facial paralysis, auricular hematoma, nasal and maxillofacial multiple fractures, and sensorineural hearing loss. Other additional traumas were determined as intracranial hemorrhage, rib fracture, pneumothorax, hemothorax, vertebral fracture, femur fracture, tibia fracture, and hand amputation. Results: The ages of the patients ranged from 4 to 74 years, and the average age was 33.6 ± 22.9 years. Twelve patients had surgical interventions, two of which were performed under general anesthesia. Hospitalizations can extend up to thirty-six days, the average hospitalization period is 4.85 days. Conclusion: Medical follow up of patients who have suffered trauma to the head-neck and face regions due to earthquakes is important because of the risk of serious morbidity and mortality.

Deprem ve Kulak Burun Boğaz Acilleri: Türkiye'nin 2023 Büyük Felaketi

Öz

Amaç: Yaklaşık on altı milyon insanın etkilendiği, çok şiddetli ve inanılmaz derecede yıkıcı iki deprem ile sarsılan Türkiye, Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’nün de alarm verdiği asrın felaketlerinden birini yaşadı. Bu çalışmanın amacı, doğal afetlerden biri olan depremin yıkıcı etkilerini kulak burun boğaz (KBB) perspektifinden değerlendirmek ve travma literatürünü zenginleştirmektir. Yöntem: Türkiye’deki 6 Şubat Depremi’nin etkilerini ortaya koymak amacıyla, 06.02.2023 ile 06.03.2023 tarihleri arasında tarafımıza konsülte edilen ve eksiksiz dosya verilerine sahip hastalar çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. KBB travmaları, boyun hematomu, periferik yüz felci, kulak hematomu, nazal ve maksillofasiyal çoklu kırıklar, sensörinöral işitme kaybı gibi durumları kapsamaktadır. Diğer ek travmalar ise intrakraniyal hemoraji, kaburga kırığı, pnömotoraks, hemotoraks, vertebral kırık, femur kırığı, tibia kırığı ve el amputasyonu olarak belirlenmiştir. Bulgular: Hastaların yaşları 4 ila 74 arasında değişmekte olup, ortalama yaş 33.6 ± 22.9 yıldır. On iki hastaya cerrahi müdahale uygulanmış ve bu müdahalelerden ikisi genel anestezi altında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Hastane yatış süreleri otuz altı güne kadar uzayabilmekle birlikte, ortalama yatış süreleri 4.85 gündür. Sonuç: Deprem nedeniyle baş-boyun ve yüz bölgesinden travma geçiren hastaların ciddi morbidite ve mortalite riski nedeniyle tıbbi takibi oldukça önemlidir.
