Breastfeeding education, practices to enhance breast milk production, and vitamin supplements for breastfeeding mothers: a cross-sectional study

Öz

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate breastfeeding education and the frequency of use of practices intended to increase breast milk production (galactagogues, dietary modifications, and vitamin supplementation) among breastfeeding mothers. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study included 377 mothers who visited a tertiary care center, had infants aged 6–24 months, and were continuing to breastfeed. Whether mothers had received breastfeeding education was determined by whether the participating mothers had visited our hospital’s breastfeeding clinic before or after delivery. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A significant proportion of participants (65%) had received breastfeeding education. In contrast, the rates of use of galactagogues and vitamin supplements varied. While breastfeeding behaviors were observed to be more positive among mothers who received education, it was noted that while the mother decided the use of support products, she requested the selection from the pharmacist. It was observed that mothers who received breastfeeding support education during the prenatal and postnatal periods used galactagogues less frequently and breastfed their babies for longer periods. Conclusion: Despite the high rate of breastfeeding education, there remains significant variation in the use of galactagogues and vitamin supplements among breastfeeding mothers. This underscores the need for evidence-based and standardized breastfeeding counseling.
