Language Acquisition from the Perspective of Cognitive Linguistics

Abstract

There are many theories that have tried to explain the mechanism of language acquisition in individuals, and each theory is distinguished by a special proposal supported by evi-dence and proofs; In this context, we find the interest of cognitive linguistics theory in researching the relationship between language, mind and reality, and the attempt of the scholars of this linguistic theory to explain the process of language acquisition in individuals, by benefiting from the outputs of other cognitive sciences, such as cognitive psychology, transformational linguistics, neuroscience, and software. The importance of the research lies in its attempt to provide a new view on the process of language acquisition in individuals, the surrounding circumstances, and the factors affecting it from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. Accordingly, the research paper in our hands aims to identify the cognitive conception of language, and to present a new view proposed by the supporters of cognitive linguistics to explain the process of language acquisition in the individual, to form with the opinions it presents a distinct linguistic alternative, seeking to create a suitable environment for its applications in many interdisciplinary studies, and contrary to what we find in previous approaches, such as the behavioral, structural, or generative transformational approaches. The research will approach the previous ideas based on the mechanisms and principles of the two approaches: historical, and descriptiveanalytical, which are ideal in such research; starting from a basic problem centered on the following question: How did cognitive linguistics explain the individual's acquisition of language? To answer this question, the research was built on several basic research elements, starting from defining cognitive linguistics, and explaining its foundations and importance; then we reviewed in the next step, paving the way for what comes after it the concept of language acquisition, and the factors that motivate it; relying on the hypothesis that language acquisition is an innate, spontaneous process that the individual carries out without intention or choice, under the influence of environmental and biological factors together. Let us enter the most important part of the research, which deals with the cognitive linguistic interpretation of language acquisition in the individual, and we highlighted in it the adoption of cognitive linguistics of several concepts that form the basis that explains how language and thinking are formed in the human mind, and we mean by them the concepts of: Embodiment, mental space, schema, category, and prototype. The last element of the research presents the ideas of some scholars of cognitive linguistics and their view of the individual's acquisition of language, focusing on balancing those ideas with their counterparts in previous theories on the same subject; which made it possible to stand on the points of distinction that cognitive linguistics raises in this regard. It was possible to follow the different opinions on the studied subject to reach important results, the most important of which are: Cognitive linguistics considers language a mental phenomenon and a cognitive function that must be studied in terms of it being a tool of knowledge and organizing information in the mind, and that the process of linguistic acquisition is influenced by the two factors of "experience and interaction with the environment" that play a role in the development of the individual's linguistic abilities; Language acquisition is the result of a combination of the primary brain structures specific to language, cognitive foundations, and the interaction of all of this with the environment, in light of the interconnection of the individual's mental abilities with the organizing components of the brain, and the close relationship between language and knowledge. The individual acquires language by employing mental mechanisms, including: Embodiment, which is the integration of body and mind, and that the body affects how we understand the world and build our perceptions of it, and then express it. In addition to the concept of "mental space", which refers to the temporary mental structures that we use when thinking, speaking, organizing information and interpreting it in specific expressive situations. As for the concept of "schema", it indicates that the process of acquiring, un-derstanding and employing language is done through mental processes, that is, in the form of "conceptual structures" formed from a cognitive structure obtained from previous experiences,
