The Functionality of Religious Education in Taking Responsibility and Responsible Decision Making

Öz

While the modern world promises individuals a field of unlimited freedom, it simultaneously brings about erosions such as narcissism, excessive individualism, and selfishness as side effects. In this process, the sense of responsibility has begun to be perceived as a restrictive "burden" on the shoulders of the individual, leading to the weakening of values such as solidarity and altruism. Especially in today's rapidly digitalizing world, the "objectification" of individuals in the face of technology and the weakening of volitional processes have made education of responsibi-litymore critical than ever. The transformation of the family structure and the exam-oriented nature of current educational systems narrow the spaces where young people can take responsibility as "subjects." In this context, there is a need for a new pedagogical and theological approach that balances individual identity formation and social harmony. This study aims to redefine the sense of res-ponsibility at the intersection of modern pedagogy and religious education and to develop strategic solutions against this erosion. This research is conducted using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research designs. Within the scope of the study, the fundamental messages of the Qur'an, the responsibility models in the lives of the prophets, and the current educational curricula published by the Ministry of National Education (especially the Türkiye Century Education Model and the RCMK Program) are selected as data sources. The obtained data is subjected to content analysis within the framework of the themes of "accountability," "altruism," "self-control," and "self-regulation." By performing an intertextual reading, the conceptual links between religious concepts and modern pedagogical competences are deciphered. The findings of the research show that the sense of responsibility is not only a metaphysical "hereafter" expectation but, on the contrary, a constitutive element of worldly peace and justice. The human model constructed by Qur’an through the concepts of "amanah" (trust) and "khalifa" (vicegerent) is a "subject" profile endowed with an existential responsibility. This profile, acting with the consciousness of divine supervision (ihsan), develops an internal self-control mechanism without the need for an external authority. When the current educational curricula are examined, it is seen that responsibility is handled with a "skill and value" oriented approach. Particularly, the "self-regulation" competence emphasized in the Türkiye Century Education Model directly overlaps with the concepts of "free will and accountability" in religious education. As a result of the discussions, it has been determined that the transcendent ground of meaning offered by religious education transforms pedagogical processes from being a mechanical skill teaching into a permanent character construction. The study concludes that respon-sibility education is a process of constructing the individual as a "subject," arising from the synthesis of modern pedagogical approaches and the moral ground provided by religious education. Within this framework, it has been observed that "self-regulation" as a pedagogical competence, combined with the consciousness of "accountability" based on free will, transforms theoretical values into "righteous deeds" (salih amel) that generate social utility. Ultimately, it is concluded that religious education possesses a critical potential that enables the individual to interpret their existence through ethical sensitivity by transcending responsibility from a static duty. At this point, responsibility education evolves beyond mere character building into a struggle to protect human dignity and will under the siege of modernity. In this respect, religious education is not expected merely to assign social duties to the individual; rather, it is expected to grant a freedom centered on goodness and justice by instilling a sense of universal responsibility. Only in this way can the individual transform into a personality liberated through their righteous deeds. In light of these findings; it is recommended to treat responsibility as an independent theme in the curricula, that experiential learning areas (projects focused on righteous deeds) where young people can generate social utility with their free will be increased, and that responsibility be presented not as a "burden" but as a character trait that liberates and makes the individual happy. Centering the principle of "ethical accountability" in educational processes is of vital importance in the construction of the modern human as a virtuous individual by escaping the grip of narcissism.
