Earthquake Awareness Scale for Secondary School Students: Vali-dity and Reliability Study
Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop an appropriate scale to assess the earthquake awareness levels of middle school students. While writing the scale items, studies on earthquake awareness in the literature were examined and a draft question form consisting of 30 questions was created. For content validity, 10 experts were consulted. In the content validity ratio analysis, 2 questions that did not meet the validity criteria in line with expert opinions were removed from the scale and the draft scale consisting of 28 questions was applied. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted by analyzing the data obtained from 479 students studying in 32 schools in Hatay province. As a result of the factor analysis, 8 items were discarded. The new version of the scale form was reapplied for confirmatory factor analysis and the data collected from 364 students were analyzed. As a result of the factor analysis, two dimensions were obtained. The obtained dimensions were named as “earthquake awareness” and “preparedness”. The total variance explained by the scale consisting of 20 items was found to be 51.36%. With confirmatory factor analysis, it was concluded that the scale was at the level of perfect fit and acceptable fit in terms of model fit criteria. The Cronbach Alpha coefficient value of the measurement tool was found to be 0.847. It was concluded that the earthquake awareness scale is a valid and reliable tool to measure the earthquake awareness of secondary school students.
