The Concept of Tabattul from Jahiliyya to Islam (An Etymological, Semantic, and Terminological Analysis)
Abstract
This study explores tabattul, a core concept in Islamic thought, meaning complete devotion and detachment from worldly desires to focus entirely on Allah. Derived from "b-t-l" (to cut off), the study traces its evolution from pre-Islamic usage to its central role in Islam. The Qur'an (Surah al-Muzzammil, verse 8) commands tabattul, which is elaborated upon in tafsir (exegesis). While a hadith states, "There is no monasticism and no tabattul in Islam", it refers to the extreme asceticism of Christianity, not the Qur'anic concept of sincere devotion within a balanced life. Early Muslims and Sufis understood tabattul as sincere worship and turning to Allah. The study highlights the systematization of tabattul as a Sufi term after the 4th century AH, particularly by al-Harawi and al-Kashani. They define it as a spiritual journey, progressing from purifying the nafs (ego) to achieving fana' fillah (annihilation in Allah) and baqa' billah (subsistence in Allah). Crucially, the study emphasizes tabattul's contemporary relevance. It's not merely a historical concept but a practical path for inner transformation, achievable through mindfulness, voluntary simplicity, regular worship, effective time management, and serving others. Tabattul offers a pathway to closeness with Allah and a meaningful life, applicable to both past and present seekers. It provides a framework for achieving a meaningful existence through dedicated spiritual practice.
