A Migration Which a Mythological Memory Guides: the Movement of Puritanist Migration

Öz

This article is aimed to study the background of the Protestant Puritanism migration to America which intensifies in 1630s and the period of mythologization of that migration in England. Herein, the existence of the socio-political and religious-ethical reasons in the background of desire of migration is dealt with. In this context, the opposition period between Puritans and Royalty is mentioned in different aspects. To get worse this disagreement was caused to lose the Puritan movement in the respect of political and religious and was required to find a way out, immediately. In this matter, Puritans put the idea of migration to America. Since, according to them living in England was impossible. Migration, as a way of escape from pressures, was discussed in the mythological dimension by reckoning without political, religious, social and ethical situations. The references of this mythological discourse are originated in the Old Testament. The Puritans, regarding their life in England as stories in the Old Testament which narrate the divine punishments, leaving the prophets of their tribes and so on, transformed migration to America to a myth.

Mitolojik Bir Hafızanın Yönlendirdiği Bir Göç: Puritanist Göç Hareketi

Bu çalışma, İngiltere’de Protestan Puritan hareketin 1630’larda yoğunluk kazanan Amerika göçünün arka planını ve bu göçün mitoslaştırılması sürecini irdelemeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu noktada göç arzusunun geri planındaki sosyo-politik ve dini-ahlâki nedenlerin varlığı, ele alınmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Puritanlar ile Kraliyet arasındaki muhalefet süreci çeşitli açılardan zikredilmektedir. Bu karşıtlığın sertleşmesi, Puritan hareketin siyasi ve dini açıdan gücünü yitirmesine yol açmış ve derhal bir çözüm yolu bulmasını elzem kılmıştır. İşte bu noktada Puritanlar, İngiltere’de yaşamanın mümkün olmadığına hükmederek Amerika’ya göç fikrini ortaya attılar. Baskılardan kurtulmanın yolu olan göç hareketi, siyasi, dini, sosyal ve ahlâki durumlar göz ardı edilerek mitolojik bir boyutta ele alındı. Bu mitolojik söylemin temel referansları Eski Ahit kaynaklıdır. Puritanlar, Eski Ahit’teki ilahi cezalandırmalar, peygamberlerin kavimlerini terk edişi ve benzeri hikâyelerle İngiltere’deki yaşamlarını benzeştirerek Amerika’ya göçü bir mit haline dönüştürdüler.
