Analysis of Traditional Child Plays in Supporting Brain Parts

Öz

Early childhood is the period in which the brain develops most rapidly. High-quality educational experiences provided during this stage support children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development, laying the foundation for future learning. In this developmental process, play is the most natural and effective way to support brain development. The aim of this study is to examine the traditional children’s games included in the book “100 Face-to-Face Traditional Plays for Children”, published by the Ministry of National Education, in terms of the brain regions they support. The book features one hundred traditional games compiled from all 81 provinces of Türkiye, along with their objectives and instructions. A descriptive qualitative research design was adopted. The plays were analysed through content analysis, and the Brain Parts Checklist was used during the analysis phase. The analysis, conducted using MAXQDA software, yielded an inter-coder reliability coefficient of 84%. According to the findings, the 100 traditional plays support seven major brain regions at varying levels: the Frontal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Temporal Lobe, Association Areas, Limbic-Paralimbic Regions, and the Cerebellum. The frontal lobe, associated with decision-making and higher-order thinking skills, was found to be the most supported area. Additionally, the plays were observed to stimulate the primary and secondary visual cortex in the occipital lobe and to foster social interaction and problem-solving skills within the association areas. On the other hand, no plays were found to support brain functions such as Olfactory Bulb. These findings reveal the cognitive richness embedded in traditional children’s play.
