AN EVALUATION ON THE METHODS OF THE VOCABULARY STUDIES CONDUCTED ABROAD
Abstract
Nowadays, it has been observed that the number of vocabulary studies has increased, and diversified with respect to target, scope and method. New needs that emerge as a result of the rapid social changes, changing definitions of the individual, and new understandings of education explain not only the increase in the number of vocabulary studies, but also the diversification in the methods used for these studies. The studies which were generally conducted in the past in order to detect the vocabulary of the language (frequency studies) and in which quantitative methods were dominantly used have been focusing nowadays on enriching the vocabulary, especially on the targets of improving the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and functionalizing the educational materials. In accordance with these targets, it is observed that alongside with quantitative methods, qualitative methods have been used in the studies abroad, and that different analysis methods have been developed.In this study, evaluations are made on the methods of some studies conducted abroad on vocabulary. Precedence in the evaluation is given to the frequency studies, the first stage of the subject, and afterwards, the methods used nowadays in the studies that aim especially at developing the vocabulary are emphasized. Criteria of NRP (The National Reading Panel), actively engaged in the vocabulary studies, predominantly in the USA, were benefited from in selecting the studies used in the evaluation. 10 reading-focused studies, most of which were also evaluated by NRP and which were obtained from ERIC database, were investigated with regards to their targets and methods, and the methods that especially constitute the basis of the studies. In the aforementioned evaluation, the discussions prominent in the West with respect to vocabulary via the common findings in the investigated studies were also included

YURT DIŞINDA YAPILMIŞ SÖZ VARLIĞI ÇALIŞMALARININ YÖNTEMLERİ ÜZERİNE BİR DEĞERLENDİRME
Öz
Günümüzde söz varlığına ilişkin çalışmaların arttığı, amaç, kapsam ve yöntem bakımından giderek çeşitlendiği gözlemlenmektedir. Toplumsal alandaki hızlı dönüşümlerin, değişen birey tanımlarının ve yeni eğitim anlayışlarının ortaya çıkardığı yeni ihtiyaçlar, yalnızca söz varlığı çalışmalarındaki artışı değil, aynı zamanda, bu çalışmalarda kullanılan yöntemlerdeki çeşitlenmeyi de açıklamaktadır. Geçmişte genellikle dilin kelime hazinesini tespit etmeye (sıklık çalışmaları) dönük olarak gerçekleştirilen ve ağırlıklı olarak nicel yöntemlerin kullanıldığı çalışmalar, günümüzde söz varlığını geliştirmeye, özellikle de dinleme, konuşma, okuma ve yazma becerilerinin geliştirilmesi ve eğitim materyallerinin daha işlevsel hâle getirilmesi gibi amaçlara odaklanmıştır. Bu amaçlar ekseninde yurt dışındaki çalışmalarda nicel yöntemlerle birlikte, nitel yöntemlerin de kullanılmaya başlandığı, farklı analiz metotları geliştirildiği görülmektedir.Bu çalışmada söz varlığı konusunda yurt dışında yapılmış bazı çalışmaların yöntemleri üzerine değerlendirmeler yapılmaktadır. Değerlendirmede öncelik konunun ilk aşaması olan sıklık çalışmalarına verilmekte, daha sonra ise günümüzde özellikle söz varlığını gelişimini amaçlayan çalışmalarda kullanılan yöntemler üzerinde durulmaktadır. Değerlendirmede kullanılan çalışmaların seçiminde, ağırlıklı olarak Amerika’da söz varlığı çalışmaları konusunda aktif olarak faaliyet gösteren NRP’nin (The National Reading Panel [Ulusal Okuma Masası]) kriterlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Çoğu NRP tarafından da değerlendirmeye alınan ve ERIC veri tabanından elde edilmiş okuma odaklı 10 çalışma, amaçları ve yöntemleri bakımından incelenmiş, özellikle çalışmalara temel teşkil eden yöntemler irdelenmiştir. Söz konusu değerlendirmede ayrıca incelenen çalışmalardaki ortak bulgular üzerinden söz varlığı konusunda Batı’da öne çıkan tartışmalara yer verilmiştir
