Tepegöz in the Context of Posthuman Folklore
Öz
The Dede Korkut Stories have largely been evaluated in folklore studies as products of an anthropocentric approach that positions humans as privileged subjects; animals, objects, and natural elements have generally been treated as symbolic, auxiliary, or secondary actors. This study aims to move beyond the understanding of an anthropocentric culture that situates humans at the apex of all beings and to analyze the story titled Basat’ın Tepegözü Öldürdüğü Boy from a posthumanist perspective. Posthumanism situates itself within a theoretical framework that problematizes the modern, human-centered conception of the subject and defines subjectivity as a “process” constituted through the mutual interactions of humans, animals, nature, and objects. From this perspective, the narrative universe of Dede Korkut appears particularly suitable for a posthumanist reading. Since folklore discourse functions as a mode of transmitting cultural norms and social identity, it has traditionally been regarded as a domain exclusive to humans. Moreover, folklore narratives emphasize and naturalize the distinction between human and non-human entities. Posthumanism challenges these naturalized and normative boundaries by foregrounding ontological pluralism—that is, by recognizing not only the human subject but also animals, objects, technologies, environments, and material elements as existing and influential actors. In this framework, meaning emerges through relationality, arising from interactions between human and non-human agents. Consequently, the conventional nature–culture dichotomy begins to dissolve, giving rise to a concept of posthuman folklore. Posthuman folklore enables the reinterpretation of folklore through perspectives such as animal studies and digitalization, emphasizing the ontological proximity between humans and other living species and the recognition of non-human cultures. From this viewpoint, folklore does not belong solely to humans. Non-human actors, including animals, objects, places, technologies, material environments, and even algorithms, can actively participate in the formation of folklore. Within this context, the human/non-human opposition is revealed to be fictive. The concept of the folkloric subject thus expands in accordance with the view that the human/non-human dichotomy is constructed rather than given. In folklore discourse, folkloric subjects are traditionally identified with a human community; however, from a posthumanist perspective, the folkloric subject does not possess a fixed or unified identity. While traditional folklore conceives the subject that produces folklore as a single, stable human collective, the posthumanist approach argues that the folkloric subject is continuously constructed and transformed through relational processes. The posthuman subject represents a heterogeneous, hybrid, and plural mode of existence that exceeds the normative human model. This approach demonstrates that in folkloric narratives, non-human entities are not merely symbolic or passive elements but can be understood as primary agents that drive the narrative. The story Basat’ın Tepegözü Öldürdüğü Boy is particularly amenable to such a reading. Within a narrative structured around the human/non-human opposition, Tepegöz is rendered monstrous due to his transgressive body and his violation of the normative human model. A posthumanist reading suggests that this figure functions as more than a symbolic or passive element; rather, he operates as an agent that actively shapes the narrative. Tepegöz’s hybrid corporeality and his acts of bodily consumption expose the permeability of ontological boundaries between the human and the non-human, contributing to the emergence of a posthuman subject form that destabilizes the fixed, unified, and privileged human subject. However, within an anthropocentric ethical and aesthetic order, this mode of existence is coded as a threat. Consequently, Tepegöz’s death is legitimized as a normative intervention that reasserts the ontological supremacy of anthropocentric thought. In this context, the study aims to examine how Tepegöz is constructed as both a folkloric and posthuman subject within the narrative, how he becomes a non-human agent through corporeality, and how his death is interpreted within a posthuman ethical framework.
