Mediating Role of Music Appreciation on the Relationship Between Religious Attitude and Stigma

Öz

Religious attitude (RA) can play a crucial role in shaping individual behavior; these personal constructs can sometimes be associated with negative situations, such as stigma. Stigma (ST) is a multifaceted social phenomenon that permeates various facets of human interaction, including music appreciation (MA). Therefore, this research addresses the question: "How does individuals' MA mediate the relationship between RA and ST?" The relational survey design is used in this research. Structural equation model (SEM) and Baron & Kenny’s mediator model is used to examine the mediating role of MA in the relationship between RA and ST. Snowball sampling is used to collect 327 participants who are between 20 and 55 years old x̅ =33.72) Ok’s (2011) The Religious Attitude Scale (RAS), Yaman and Güngör’s (2013) The Stigma Scale (SS) and Music Appreciation Form are instruments for data collection. Results showed that musical appreciation played a full mediating role in the relationship between RA and ST, although RA and ST are not correlated at a significant level. A positive correlation between RA and ST became stronger and significant through Rock and Classical Western Music, while hip-hop turned it into a negative correlation between RA and ST but it is not statistically at significant level. The findings indicate that appreciation of different music genres serve as psychological mediators between spirituality and social prejudice and influence the way stigmatization is expressed.
