Quiet Firing in the Tourism Sector
Öz
This study aims to examine the phenomenon of quiet firing in the tourism sector through the experiences of employees. The study was conducted with qualitative method and structured interview technique was used. The study group consists of 15 employees working in five-star hotels and travel agencies operating in Antalya who stated that they experienced quiet firing. The data obtained were evaluated by thematic analysis method. The findings of the study revealed that during the quiet firing process, managers exhibited behaviors such as reducing or transferring the duties of the employees to other employees, making unfair criticism, deliberately increasing the workload, postponing leave days, extending working hours and ignoring the opinions of the employees. In this process, it has been determined that employees are excluded from the work environment and communication with managers and colleagues is weakened. It has been determined that the quiet firing experience creates intense negative emotions such as worthlessness, loneliness, helplessness, stress, anxiety and burnout in employees. In addition, it was observed that this process interrupted the career development of the employees, negatively affected their psychological well-being and in most cases resulted in turnover. As a result of the study, it is emphasized that in order to prevent quiet firing practices, open and transparent communication mechanisms should be established, managers should be effectively supervised and ethical leadership should be strengthened. With these findings, the study contributes to the phenomenon of quiet firing in the tourism sector from the perspective of the employee.
