Ardahan province is located in a very important region as it is one of the transition routes between Anatolia and the Caucasus. The advantage of this strategic location has ensured that the region has been inhabited since ancient times. The region's rich river net and wide plains have prepared the ground for the people living in Ardahan and its surroundings to engage in agriculture and animal husbandry since ancient times. In the region, where traces of life have been seen since the Neolithic Age, intense settlement of Karaz Culture people from the Early Bronze Age has been observed. The region has become a field of struggle between the Urartian State, one of the important political forces of the Iron Age, and Diauehi. The presence of the Urartians in the region is known through the inscriptions describing the expeditions of the Urartian State to the north. Sengertepe Castle, located in the Çıldır district of Ardahan province, controls the historical road on the Kars-Çıldır-Ardahan route passing through its south territory. Sengertepe is located at a point overlooking Çıldır Lake, Akçakale Village, and Akçakale Island. With the advantage of its location, it is understood that the castle was used since the Late Chalcolithic Age, and the fortifications continued to function by repairing in the Medieval and Ottoman periods. We believe that the castle, which has preserved its existence in the historical course of the region, is an important center in this sense.
