The Mediating Role of Mindfulness in the Relationship between Coronavirus Anxiety and Intolerance to Uncertainty

Covid-19 anxiety is a type of anxiety that occurs with the fear of catching the disease in the future. Intolerance of uncertainty can be defined as an attitude that negative situations that a person may experience in the future are unacceptable. Mindfulness, on the other hand, is a "now"-centered state of consciousness that requires one to accept moment-to-moment experiences without judgment. While anxiety causes the mind to be constantly preoccupied with the past or future, mindfulness can help combat anxiety by helping the mind focus on the present moment. From this point of view, it is aimed to determine the relationship between Covid-19 Anxiety (CVA), Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU), and Mindfulness (M) and to reveal whether mindfulness has a mediating variable effect in this relationship. The research was carried out with 737 participants. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to test the effect of IT and M on CVA. The results revealed that there were significant differences according to various variables of Covid-19 anxiety. According to the findings of the correlation analysis, there was a negative relationship between CVA and M, and a positive relationship between IU, and a negative significant relationship between M and IU. According to the results of the mediation effect analysis, it was seen that M played a partial mediator role between IU and CVA. While intolerance of uncertainty has a direct predictive effect of coronavirus anxiety, when BP is added to the relationship, the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on coronavirus anxiety decreases. This finding was interpreted as mindfulness being a protective factor for coronavirus anxiety.

Öz
Koronavirüs anksiyetesi hastalığa gelecekte yakalanma korkusu ile ortaya çıkan bir anksiyete türüdür. Belirsizliğe tahammülsüzlük kişinin gelecekte yaşayabileceği olumsuz durumların kabul edilemez olduğuna dair bir tutum şeklinde tanımlanabilir. Öte yandan bilinçli farkındalık ise, kişinin anbean deneyimlerini yargısız bir şekilde kabul etmesini gerektiren “şimdi” merkezli bir bilinç halidir. Anksiyete zihnin sürekli olarak geçmiş veya gelecekle meşgul olmasına neden olurken, bilinçli farkındalık zihnin şimdiki ana odaklanmasına yardımcı olarak kaygıyla mücadeleye yardımcı olabilir. Buradan hareketle hem Koronavirüs Anksiyetesi (KVA), Belirsizliğe Tahammülsüzlük (BT), Bilinçli Farkındalık (BF) arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek hem de bu ilişkide bilinçli farkındalığın aracı değişken etkisine sahip olup olmadığını ortaya koymak hedeflenmiştir. Ayrıca KVA çeşitli demografik değişkenler açısından incelenmiştir. Araştırma 737 katılımcı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. KVA üzerinde BT ve BF'ın etkisini test etmek amacıyla hiyerarşik regresyon analizi yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar koronavirüs anksiyetesinin çeşitli değişkenlerine göre anlamlı farklılık gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Korelasyon analizi bulgularına göre KVA ile BF arasında negatif yönde, BT arasında ise pozitif yönde bir ilişki bulunurken, BF ve BT arasında negatif yönde anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Yapılan aracılık etkisi analizi sonuçlarına göre, BF’ın BT ve KVA arasında kısmi aracı rol oynadığı görülmüştür. Belirsizliğe tahammülsüzlük koronavirüs anksiyetesini doğrudan yordama etkisine sahipken, ilişkiye BF eklendiğinde belirsizliğe tahammülsüzlüğün koronavirüs anksiyetesi üzerindeki etkisi düşmektedir. Bu bulgu bilinçli farkındalığın koronavirüs anksiyetesine yönelik koruyucu bir faktör olduğu şeklinde yorumlanmıştır.
