WHAT REMAINS OF TEACHERS’ INTERNSHIP PRACTICES DURING THE PANDEMIC: IMPROVED DIGITAL SKILLS OR DIGITAL INEQUALITY?

Öz

The 21st century has brought various inequalities for individuals; the 2020 pandemic has exacerbated these inequalities, particularly in education worldwide. Hence, digital inequality is considered one of the most crucial social problems in education. Internship practices at higher education institutions in Turkey were also conducted online in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. While online internships have improved the digital skills of prospective teachers (PTs), they have also had adverse effects, including contributing to digital inequality among all stakeholders. The current paper aims to evaluate the challenges encountered during online internship practice (OIP) through the lens of PTs and university academic counsellors (UACs), particularly to identify the strengths and weaknesses of OIP and to offer suggestions for future online applications. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method, with 8 PTs and 10 UACs. The qualitative data collected via open-ended questionnaires, the narration technique, and group focus were evaluated through content analysis. The results revealed that the participants experienced fear, nervousness, and anxiety at the beginning of OIP due to the system's unfamiliar structure, but they successfully navigated subsequent phases and adapted well to online education and internship practices. The study also revealed that OIP led to digital inequality; both online students and research participants experienced difficulties, particularly with using new online education applications and with classroom management, owing to students' lack of digital equipment and internet access. Nevertheless, despite their initial negative views of practice, the PTs also gained experience through online internships in communicating with students, classroom management, effective lesson delivery, and the effective use of digital educational applications. However, online internships were less preferred by the participants than face-to-face internships, especially due to shortages of digital equipment and internet access, which also contributed to digital inequality. To make online internship applications more effective, the participants recommended that the PTs be trained in digital applications before online internship practices begin, and that students’ digital equipment and internet access problems, which lead to digital inequality, be eliminated.
