Determination of seedling growth of maize in responce to seed priming with different NaCl doses in saline soils

Abstract

Aims: This study was conducted to determine the seedling growth of maize seeds treated with NaCl in saline soils.

Methods and Results: In the study, it was investigated that seedling development of two different corn varieties (Pasha and P-31A34) treated for different duration (0, 12 and 24 hours) with different NaCl priming doses (0 g l-1, 5 g l-1 and 10 g l-1 NaCl) in saline soils with different salinity levels (control, 6 dS m-1 and 12 dS m-1). As a result of the study, the responses of cultivars to soil salinity was different, and plant height, stem fresh weigth, stem dry weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight, root / stem ratio and salt tolerance index were negatively affected due to the increases in soil salinity level. It has been determined that the treatment of seeds with 5 g l-1 NaCl before sowing has a positive effect on the investigated characteristics.

Conclusions: As a result of the study, it has been determined that there are differences between the cultivars in terms of the characteristics examined, the seedling characteristics are negatively affected due to the increases in soil salinity, the treatment of the seed with 5 g l-1 NaCl has a positive effect on the seedling development, and it was determined that the choice of cultivars is important in soils with salinity problems.

Significance and Impact of the Study: The results obtained revealed that plant growth was negatively affected by the increase in soil salinity, tolerances of cultivars differed, and the choice of varieties should be considered especially in soils with salt problems.
