An Analysis of Tropical Gardens in the Context of Biophilic Criteria: The Case of Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden
Abstract
Technological developments led to an increase in industrialization and urbanization activities. This increase leads to environmental problems and a move away from nature, which has psychologically and physiologically negative effects on humans. In the architectural design process, which takes place in the interaction of humans, nature and the built environment, the biophilia approach, which prioritizes the human-nature relationship and directs people back to nature, emerges as one of the approaches that direct architectural design. Tropical gardens, which have become one of the key tourism destinations in recent years, enabling people to be immersed in nature, supporting mental renewal, and facilitating social connections, are located in cities as nature-based recreational areas. In this study, which examines tropical gardens from a biophilic design perspective, the Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden, taken as a case building, has been analyzed according to Kellert and Calabrese's (2015) biophilic design criteria, and the degree to which the elements were met has been evaluated at three levels in line with the determined criteria: ‘weak,’ ‘moderate,’ and ‘strong’. The building, which offers people the opportunity to socialize and interact with nature, has been seen to integrate nature by bringing it indoors and imitating elements belonging to nature. It has been determined that some elements are partially or strongly fulfilled in the building, while the element of fire is not available. As a result of the evaluations, recommendations have been presented for the development of the building in terms of biophilic design criteria.
