The Lifeworld of Microalgae: The Invention of Problems and Artistic Discoveries

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 11 Sayı: 2, 241 - 263, 08.01.2025

Öz

This paper argues that the existence of microalgae consists of lifeworlds that go beyond the dichotomy of benefit and harm often imposed by human cultures. By integrating Donna Haraway’s idea of “staying with the problem” with Gilbert Simondon’s concept of “problem”, it proposes a broader conceptualization of the lifeworld of microalgae. As the primary producers of life on Earth, microalgae form complex relationships with living and non-living beings in their environment. Their involvement in ecological issues such as mucilage threatening marine ecosystems and their use in sustainable design as a biofuel source situate them at the intersection of benefit and harm. However, problematizing their lifeworlds requires recognizing their unique patterns of action and communication, and their complex spatio-temporal dynamics. This paper suggests that artistic explorations, including science-art collaborations and speculative design, offer alternative perspectives that transcend reductionist frameworks and reveal the complexity of microalgal lifeworlds.
