From Status Signaling to Extended Self: Conspicuous Consumption in Automobile Ownership
Öz
This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between conspicuous consumption tendency and the extended self in the context of automobile ownership in Turkey, where vehicles serve as both symbolic status markers and financial assets.
A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected from 656 automobile owners through an online survey.
The analysis revealed that conspicuous consumption tendency has a significant positive effect on the extended self. Additionally, no significant difference was observed in conspicuous consumption tendencies based on objective income levels, supporting the "compensatory consumption" hypothesis. However, perceived income was found to influence the dependence dimension of the extended self.
This study demonstrates that social performance and internal identity construction are not mutually exclusive. It is concluded that the motivation for conspicuous consumption acts as a catalyst for the construction of the extended self, as social visibility and validation facilitate the psychological incorporation of the object.
