Öz

Sosyal sermaye terimi yakın geçmişte ve şimdilerde moda olmaya başlar-ken, kavram geleneksel sosyolojik düşüncenin iki kolunun merkezindedir. Yazıları boyunca Emile Durkheim (1951, 1961); bağlılık (connectedness) ve sosyal kontrolle karakterize olan birleştirici(cohesive) bir sosyal sistemin, üyelerinin refahını teşvik ettiğini ifade etmiştir. Durkheim sosyal hayatın kendisinin, bireysel düzeydeki bileşenlerine indirgenemeyecek temel bir unsur olduğunu savunmuştur. Gerçek bir siyaset kuramcısı ve sosyal teo-risyen olan Alexis de Tocqueville (1945) de canlı (vibrant) sosyal toplu-lukların, sivil katılımı ve kamu yararına bağlılığı arttıran güven tesis et-mek suretiyle, sosyal hayatın erdemli bir döngüsünü oluşturduğunu ha-tırlatmıştır.
