From Silent Horror to Digital Gothic: A Comparison of the 1922 and 2024 Nosferatu Films in Terms of Visual Effectscts

This article examines the impact of technological developments in horror cinema by comparing the visual effects of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) and Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu (2024). In the 1922 production, due to limited technological means, techniques such as stop-motion and makeup were employed to create atmosphere, while the influence of Expressionist cinema deepened the elements of fear. In contrast, Eggers’s 2024 adaptation strengthens the film’s gothic atmosphere through the integration of CGI and practical visual effects. The work is considered one of the remarkable examples in which classical cinematic elements are blended with modern technology, similar to Dracula (1931) and Psycho (1960). In this context, the study seeks to answer the following questions: How was the Expressionist aesthetic of the 1922 Nosferatu created through visual effects techniques, and how did these techniques shape the perception of horror? How does the 2024 adaptation reinterpret the aesthetic legacy of the original by combining contemporary digital technologies and practical effects? Furthermore, how do the visual and narrative differences between the two films reflect the parallel evolution and aesthetic transformation of horror cinema alongside technological progress? This study contributes to the film literature by analyzing how a classic horror work has been reinterpreted across two distinct technological eras, offering new perspectives focused on the relationship between contemporary film aesthetics and technology.
