Future, Metaverse, Architecture and Construction Industry

Öz

The interest of human beings, who started to come out of their shell by stepping on the moon, continued, and today with the concept of "metaverse", whose name we are hearing more and more, started to talk about people's ability to go to different universes while sitting at home. In fact, metaverse, defined as a game platform with many universes, and managed to get noticed by many different industries, including the architecture and the construction industry. In this context, the basic idea is to introduce the metaverse and its technologies, which come to the fore with the new developments in the internet, and to make an evaluation of how the metaverse will be positioned in the future of the architecture and construction industry by looking forward from today. Within the scope of this study, the goal is providing a prediction for the future of the architecture and the construction industry by obtaining the opinions of experts on the subject and supporting it with a literature review on the possible impacts of the metaverse and the new applications and changes it will bring. A questionnaire with eleven open-ended questions prepared to evaluate the possible impacts of the metaverse on the future of the architecture and the construction industry. Within the frame of this study, interviews were conducted with seven participants from different fields of the architecture and the construction industry who had sufficient knowledge of the metaverse. The data obtained from the interviews evaluated with qualitative data analysis, and it examined in detail with content analysis. In the next step, the findings about metaverse, the construction industry and architecture evaluated with SWOT analysis. The results showed that metaverse will be used in the architecture and construction industry as a real-world test space in the future. The basic limitation of the study is number of participants with a total of seven people, although all of them from architecture and construction industry each of them from different fields, and it is because of the insufficient number of people having sufficient knowledge about the subject. When innovative applications in the architecture and construction industry within the frame of metaverse technologies will be used savings on time, cost, and workforce are expected. However, based on the results obtained we do not have a real metaverse experience, as there is no access to the infrastructure technologies required for accessing and using metaverse technologies today. In this framework, it is foreseen that today we are in a period of 'preparation for the future which will pass until we fully experience the metaverse' meaning investments will be made that will allow the preparation of infrastructure technologies.

Gelecek, Metaverse, Mimarlık ve Yapım Endüstrisi

Öz

Kabuğundan çıkması aya ayak basarak başlayan insanoğlunun, farklı evren arayışına olan ilgisi devam etmiş, günümüzde ise adını giderek daha fazla duymaya başladığımız “metaverse” kavramı ile insanların evinde otururken farklı evrenlere gidebilmesi konuşulmaya başlanmıştır. Aslında bir oyun platformu olarak tanımlanabilecek olan metaversenin içerisinde birçok evren olup, yapım endüstrisi ve mimarlık dahil birçok farklı endüstrinin ilgisini çekmeyi başarmıştır. Bu çerçevede, internette yaşanan yeni gelişmelerle gündeme gelen metaverse ve teknolojilerinin tanıtılması, bugünden ileriye bakarak metaversenin mimarlık ve yapım endüstrisinin geleceğinde nasıl konumlanacağına yönelik bir değerlendirme yapılması düşüncesinden yola çıkılmıştır. Bu çalışma kapsamında, metaverse kavramının mimarlık ve yapım endüstrisi üzerinde olabilecek etkileri, getireceği yeni uygulamalar ve değişimler üzerinde konu ile ilgili uzmanların görüşlerini alarak ve yapılan kaynak taramasıyla destekleyerek geleceğe yönelik bir öngörü sunmak amaçlanmaktadır. Metaversenin mimarlık ve yapım endüstrisindeki olası etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla hazırlanan soru kağıdı, açık uçlu on bir sorudan oluşmaktadır. Metaverse hakkında yeterli düzeyde bilgi sahibi olduğu düşünülen yedi katılımcıya ulaşılabilmiş, her biriyle görüşülmüştür. Görüşmeler sonucunda elde edilmiş olan verilerin değerlendirilmesi için nitel veri çözümlemesi kullanılmış, içerik çözümlemesiyle ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiştir. Bir sonraki aşamada, elde edilen bulgular metaverse, mimarlık ve yapım endüstrisi bağlamında SWOT çözümlemesi yapılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler metaversenin yapım endüstrisinde gerçek dünyanın deneme mekanı olarak kullanılacağını göstermektedir. Çalışmanın yedi katılımcının görüşlerine yer vermesi, her birinin farklı alanlardan olması araştırmanın en önemli sınırlaması olup, konu hakkında yeterli düzeyde bilgi sahibi kişi sayısının az olmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Yapım endüstrisinde yenileşimci (inovatif) uygulamaların kullanılmasının, metaverse teknolojileri kapsamında, zaman, maliyet ve iş gücü değişkenlerinde kazanım sağlanacağı öngörülmektedir. Bununla birlikte, içinde bulunduğumuz koşullarda altyapı teknolojilerinin yetersiz olmasının, bugün için gerçek metaverse deneyimi yaşamadığımız sonucunu da beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu çerçevede, metaverseyi tam olarak deneyimlememize kadar olacak sürecin gerekli yatırımların yapılacağı ‘geleceğe hazırlık’ dönemi olacağı, altyapı teknolojilerinin hazırlanacağı öngörülmektedir.
