A Comparative Investigation of Loneliness and Social Media Use Disorder Levels of High School Students

Öz

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between social media usage problems and high school students' levels of loneliness. One of the quantitative research methods used in the study's design was the relational survey model. 384 Istanbul-based high school students made up the study's sample. The study made use of the UCLA Loneliness Scale Short Form, the Social Media Disorder in Adolescents Scale, and a demographic information form. The study's findings indicated a positive and somewhat significant correlation between the degree of social media use disorder and the loneliness experienced by high school students. At the same time, it was found that children and girls with split parents were more likely to suffer from social media disorder. It was determined that compared to students with good and medium levels of perceived family income, those with low levels felt more alone. Furthermore, there was a substantial correlation between the number of close friends and the degree of social media use problem and loneliness. It was found that compared to other students, those who had fewer close relationships experienced greater loneliness and more social media usage disorder.

Lise Öğrencilerinin Yalnızlık ve Sosyal Medya Kullanım Bozukluğu Düzeylerinin Karşılaştırılmalı Olarak İncelenmesi

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, lisede öğrenim gören öğrencilerin yalnızlık düzeyleri ile sosyal medya kullanım bozuklukları arasındaki ilişkinin araştırılmasıdır. Araştırma nicel araştırma tekniklerinden birisi olan ilişkisel tarama modeline göre tasarlanmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini İstanbul ilinde öğrenim gören toplam 384 lise öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada demografik bilgi formu, UCLA Yalnızlık Ölçeği Kısa Formu ve Ergenlerde Sosyal Medya Bozukluğu Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda lise öğrencilerinin yalnızlık düzeyleri ile sosyal medya kullanım bozukluğu düzeyleri arasında pozitif yönlü orta düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişkiye rastlanmıştır. Aynı zamanda kız çocuklarının ve anne babası ayrı olan çocukların sosyal medya bozukluğunu daha fazla yaşadığı tespit edilmiştir. Algıladıkları aile gelir durumu kötü düzeyde olan öğrencilerin iyi ve orta düzeyde olan öğrencilere göre kendilerini daha yalnız hissettikleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin yakın arkadaş sayısı ile hem yalnızlık hem de sosyal medya kullanım bozukluğu düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir farklılaşmaya rastlanmıştır. Yakın arkadaş sayısı az olan öğrencilerin diğer öğrencilere göre daha fazla yalnız ve daha fazla sosyal medya kullanım bozukluğu yaşadığı belirlenmiştir.
