The breast milk is the most important nutrient for the babies until today, when we consider the nutrition of babies at the end of postpartum period. Breast milk and breastfeeding have many benefits like immunization, growing, psychological and socioeconomical beside the benefit of nutrition for the infant and the mother. World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend that the infants should be fed only breast milk during the first six months of life. One of the most important factors in the reduction of infant and child mortality rate is the breast milk. It is known that the psychological and physiological connection between the infant and the mother gets stronger during the breastfeeding period and it makes mother to feel herself better. While it develops the brain, the immune system and digestive system, it also reduces the incidence of pulmonary and gastrointestinal system infections. The mothers in Turkey practise some methods to increase the breast milk, 9.2% of them practise the modern methods, 42.7% of them practise both traditional and modern methods, 47.9% of them practise the traditional methods, although the written literature on traditional methods for increasing the breast milk is limited. But in Iran, 2.7% of the mothers practise modern methods and 24.7% of the mothers practise the traditional methods. When we examine the mother’s socio-demographic characteristics who practises the traditional methods during the postpartum period, it is seen that the majority of them are living in rural areas with large families and have low education level. Conclusion; breastfeeding is beneficial physically and psychologically for both mother and the baby, for that reason it is necessary to practise the scientific and traditional methods for increasing the breast milk andthe duration of breastfeeding.
