Examining the Service Efficiency of Light Rail Systems with Data Envelopment Analysis

Öz

This study addresses the effectiveness of light rail systems. In the first part of the study, the number of passengers and trips, the number of passengers per unit trip, and the energy cost (TL) per passenger and trip of Ankaray, metro and bus system, which enable the transportation of hundreds of thousands of passengers every day in Ankara, were examined. It was found that the metro system carry the highest number of passengers per trip among the Ankaray, metro and bus system. When the passenger and trip energy costs of Ankaray and metro system from the rail system were examined, it was determined that Ankaray operation is more economical. The second part of the study examined the service efficiency of the stations in the Ankaray operation. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a technique gaining interest in problem-solving in transportation systems, was used in the analysis. As a result of the study using the output-oriented CCR model, the “Beşevler” and “Dikimevi” stations, which are more densely populated with faculties, were found to be effective. It is understood that the direct connection to the faculties via Ankaray and the availability of subscription cards for the use of students are effective in choosing Beşevler and Dikimevi stations.
