The Role of Green Economy on Sustainable Development: The Case of Türkiye

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 7 Sayı: 2, 225 - 239, 27.12.2025

Öz

Sustainable development is a holistic development approach that aims to align economic growth with environmental protection and social welfare principles. Green economy is considered as a fundamental tool that supports the applicability of sustainable development with low-carbon production structures, energy efficiency, renewable energy use and circular economy practices that focus on environmental sustainability. In Turkey, the relationship between sustainable development and green economy is increasingly gaining importance within the framework of the integration of environmental and economic policies. The structural problems Turkey faces in the green transformation process create significant constraints in achieving sustainable development goals. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of green economy on sustainable development in the Turkish economy. Using the data for the period 2000–2023, Toda-Yamamoto causality approach was employed to investigate the causal relationship between the green economy and sustainable development. According to the analysis results, a significant causality relationship was determined from renewable energy consumption to sustainable development index and from sustainable development index to renewable waste consumption. When evaluated from Türkiye's perspective, it is seen that the transition to a green economy is of critical importance in the process of achieving sustainable development goals.
