Türk öğrencilerin yabancı dil olarak İngilizce eğitiminde Metaverse kullanımına ilişkin bakış açılarının incelenmesi

Öz

Metaverse, kullanıcılara farklı bir öğrenme deneyimi sunmak için çeşitli teknolojileri bir araya getiren bir ortam olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu çalışma, Türk üniversite öğrencilerinin yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğrenme süreçlerini geliştirmede Metaverse'in rolüne ilişkin algılarını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Veriler, Türkiye'deki bir devlet üniversitede eğitim alan 40 lisans öğrencisiyle yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin algıları, kişisel deneyimleri, ve Metaverse kullanmanın neden olabileceği olası sorunlar ile ilgili genel görüşlerini içeren temaları belirlemek için tematik analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular, birçok öğrencinin Metaverse'i önceden bildiğini ve onu faydalı bir teknolojik araç olarak gördüğünü, ancak çok azının gerçekten deneyim sahibi olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Öğrenciler tarafından belirlenen zorluklar ise gerekli teknolojik donanıma ulaşabilme, bu teknolojiyi kullanabilmelerini sağlayacak etkili yaklaşımlar geliştirme ve bu ortamda karşılaşabilecekleri etik sorunlarla ilgilidir. Çalışmanın sonuçları, yabancı dil eğitimcileri ve program geliştiricilere eğitim sürecinde Metaverse kullanımına ilişkin etkili yöntemler tasarlamak ve geliştirmek için bir başlangıç noktası oluşturmaktadır.

An exploration of Turkish students’ perspectives on Metaverse-enhanced English as a foreign language education

Öz

The Metaverse incorporates a variety of technologies to offer a completely new learning experience for users. This study focuses on Turkish university students' perceptions of the role of the Metaverse in developing their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning process. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a sample of 40 undergraduate students from an EFL program at a public university in Turkey. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes among students with regard to their definitions, personal experiences, perceived value, and potential barriers to utilizing the Metaverse. Findings reveal that while many students are aware of Metaverse and view it as a valuable technological tool, very few actually have experience. Challenges identified by students are related to acquiring the right technological tools, developing effective pedagogical approaches to enable their use of them, and ethical considerations surrounding this environment. The results of the study provide EFL educators and policymakers with a framework for designing and developing effective methodologies for implementing Metaverse technologies in EFL instruction.
