The 27-year evolution of the relationship between tourism and climate change: A comprehensive analysis based on VOSviewer and RStudio

Öz

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis that reveals the development, thematic foci, and collaboration patterns of the interdisciplinary research field linking climate change and tourism over the past three decades. The research was conducted with the aim of mapping the current state of the field, identifying influential researchers, and exploring emerging themes that may guide future academic agendas. A total of 3,802 publications published between 1998 and 2025, obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database, were examined. Performance indicators and scientific mapping techniques were employed, and VOSviewer and RStudio Bibliometrix software was used to visualize research strengths, thematic evolutions, focal areas, and trends. The findings highlight a significant increase in academic interest, particularly over the last 15–20 years, becoming more pronounced after the Paris Agreement and intensifying during the 2020–2024 period. Thematic clusters indicate that research has largely concentrated on destination vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation strategies, sustainable tourism policies, low-carbon transportation, and carbon footprint measurement, while certain regions and types of tourism remain relatively underexplored. Co-authorship network analysis reveals that international and interdisciplinary collaborations have been steadily increasing, and the flow of knowledge has diversified both geographically and thematically. This study provides a better understanding of the multidimensional nature of the climate change–tourism nexus and offers valuable implications for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to develop sustainable, resilient, and climate-sensitive tourism systems.

Öz

Bu çalışma, iklim değişikliği ve turizmi ilişkilendiren disiplinlerarası araştırma alanının son otuz yıldaki gelişimini, tematik odaklarını ve iş birliği örüntülerini ortaya koyan kapsamlı bir bibliyometrik analiz sunmaktadır. Araştırma, mevcut durumun haritalandırılması, etkili araştırmacıların belirlenmesi ve gelecekteki akademik gündemlere yön verecek yeni temaların keşfedilmesi amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında Web of Science Core Collection veri tabanından elde edilen 1998–2025 yılları arasında yayımlanmış toplam 3.802 yayın incelenmiştir. Performans göstergeleri ve bilimsel haritalama teknikleri kullanılmış; araştırma güçleri, tematik evrimler, odak alanları ve eğilimlerin görselleştirilmesi için VOSviewer ve RStudio Bibliometrix yazılımlarından yararlanılmıştır. Bulgular, özellikle son 15–20 yılda ve Paris Anlaşması sonrasında belirginleşen, 2020–2024 döneminde ise yoğunlaşan akademik ilgi artışını ortaya koymaktadır. Tematik kümeler, araştırmaların büyük ölçüde destinasyon kırılganlığı, uyum ve azaltım stratejileri, sürdürülebilir turizm politikaları, düşük karbonlu ulaşım ve karbon ayak izi ölçümü konularında yoğunlaştığını; buna karşılık bazı bölgeler ve turizm türlerinin hâlen araştırma açısından görece ihmal edildiğini göstermektedir. Ortak yazarlık ağı analizi, uluslararası ve disiplinlerarası iş birliklerinin giderek arttığını ve bilgi akışının coğrafi ve tematik olarak çeşitlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışma, turizm ve iklim değişikliği ilişkisinin çok boyutlu doğasına dair daha iyi bir anlayış sunmakta ve politika yapıcılar, uygulayıcılar ve araştırmacılar için sürdürülebilir, dirençli ve iklim duyarlı turizm sistemleri geliştirmeye yönelik önemli çıkarımlar sağlamaktadır.
